How We Express Ourselves- Week 17

This was a very busy week in Kindergarten!!! We started the week by visiting Meji Shrine for Fire Prevention Day. The students were so excited to see a demonstration put on by the Tokyo Fire Department. There were real actors, smoke and fire hoses. It was a fun experience for all.

We continued our inquiry into our unit How We Express Ourselves by looking at many different pieces of art from all around the world. This week we focused on artists and art from our native countries.
For South Korea we looked looked at images of many different Korean fans and watched videos on Korean fan dancing; we then created our own Korean inspired fans. For the country of Israel and Azerbaijan we looked at the art of mosaics. The students then had an opportunity  to create their own mosaics. For the country of Germany the students looked pieces from the Swiss-German born impressionist artist Paul Klee. Klee made many dream-like pieces that the students attempted to recreate.

Additionally, the students viewed artwork from American born Jackson Pollock. They watched a video on how Pollock placed paint on the canvas and then brainstormed how and what materials they would use to do the same. They all seemed to really enjoy creating a rather large Jackson Pollock inspired piece. Finally, the students looked at street art from the English based street artist Banksy. The students largely focused on a Banksy piece of a little girl with a red balloon. The students observed the painting and discussed their interpretations the piece. The students then attempted to recreate the piece and wrote a sentence about what they thought was happening with the little girl.

The students cannot wait to share their artwork with all of you next week at our celebration of learning.
Have a great weekend!!
