Where We Are in Place and Time- Week 15

A large portion of our week was devoted towards reading. All of the students discovered books that suited both their abilities and interests. They are all so excited to start reading! In-keeping with the student`s interests we will continue to make reading a large focus for the rest of the school year.

The students have also begun to show an interest in addition. This week the students had the opportunity to explore the concept of addition by using playdough addition mats during center time. The students seemed to enjoy making math a game.

Next week we will start the unit, How We Express Ourselves. We started to inquire about expression this week by creating our very own vision boards. The students created vision boards by selecting images that represent their interests from magazines and newspapers. Later in the week the students explained why they made certain selections. All of the vision boards appear to be unique representations of each child. Thank you to everyone who donated magazines. The students really enjoyed this project.

This week the students also got the chance to write as we inquired about the IB learner profile attribute of what it means to be a communicator. The students were presented with a video provocation of Sesame Street characters Bert and Ernie engaging in an example of poor communication. After watching the clip the students discussed what did not work well when Ernie tried to communicate with Bert. Then the students wrote and illustrated a picture of how they practice good communication. The writing and illustrations are displayed in the learner profile section of our room.

Have a great weekend!
