How We Express Ourselves Week 16

In our current unit, How We Express Ourselves, we are inquiring on the concepts of how expression of ideas and feelings enrich our culture. In kindergarten we will explore these concepts in multiple ways.

We will focus on art as one form of cultural expression. This week we have begun to explore artwork from different parts of the world. For Japan we focused on the world famous piece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa, by Katsushika Hokusai. After the students made observations of the piece they attempted to replicate it. For our inquiry on artwork from Turkey, the students observed and made pieces inspired by ceramic tiles from Turkey.

An additional focus for this unit will be to inquire on how celebrations are a form of cultural expression This week for show and tell the students were asked to bring in pictures from a celebration that has occurred in their family. The students loved listening to all the ways different families celebrate.

This week the students also inquired about the IB learner profile attribute of being a "Risk Taker". The students listen to the story, Brave Irene, by William Steig. Brave Irene is a story about a brave little girl going out in the cold to deliver a dress to help her sick mother. After being provided this provocation the students then reflected on how they have been brave and how they have taken risks in their own lives.

Have a great weekend!!!!

Still focusing on addition.
