Who We Are- Week 6

Kindergarten was very busy this week. We continued our inquiry about the nature of the self. This week the students participate in many art projects that were associated with the self. On one day the students looked at impressionist paintings by Georges Seurat, an artist who has many famous examples of pointillism. After observing the paintings and watching a video on pointillism the students created their own self-portraits using this technique.
The students also looked at paintings from and videos about the artist Keith Haring. They noticed that Haring drew a lot of people but only the outline of the person. After viewing Haring's painting the students went outside and created illustrations on the sidewalk with chalk that were in a similar style as the artist. We then compared the lengths of all the bodies that we drew . This fits into our continuing inquiry on length, longer vs. shorter.

This week JIES also had Health day. The day started with a intricate obstacle course that the entire school participated in. On this day Kindergarten focused on healthy eating. In our classroom the students enjoyed sorting all of the healthy pretend food from the non-healthy food. The students then chose different food items and created a 'still life' illustration.

Finally, one of our major focuses this week has been on responsibility. The students have been working very hard of crafting an essential agreement for our classroom. Our inquiry on responsibility is currently ongoing with our essential agreement in the drafting process. We look forward to completing it next week.

In music this week, we learned about body percussion. All of the students created there own rhythms with their bodies.
